Graduation Speech Essay - 670 Words
Years ago there was a traveler who came upon an old-fashioned pump from which he would have to pump the handle in order to retrieve the water. Beside the pump there was a pitcher full of water, and on the pump there was a sign. The sign instructions were to prime the pump with the water in the pitcher, pump the water for use, and then refill the pitcher. The thirsty man looked at the pitcher, the pump and the sign. He thought to himself, If I pour this water down the pump, and it doesnt work, I will have no water to drink and it will be wasted. But, if I drink the water, I will be satisfied, but the next traveler will have nothing. We as graduates are like this traveler and we have decisions to make. We have the potential to beâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦If we remember the adage, How silent the woods would be if only the best birds sang, then we will never be afraid to try. We are blessed to live in a nation with the highest standard of living on earth, with an abundance of food, freedom to travel, freedom to vote for our leaders, freedom of speech and religious belief. Yet, so much still remains to be done. We live in a nation where some are still discriminated against. We live in a nation where prisons are filled, and more are needed. In our hands, the potential for a great America can be found -- where cures for disease and cancer are discovered; where we can feed the hungry millions of the world; where peace and tolerance toward each other is taught; and where honesty and integrity prevail. Are we willing to give back to our country and use our God-given talents to make this nation the land people are always willing to die to protect? All around the world, people look to America as the land of hope and freedom, as the place of opportunity. It is up to us, the Class of 2006 to make sure that America is always the land where dreams come true and to build a future for the next generation. Our lives will not always be easy, and the struggle to build a better America is not one for those who shirk responsibility.
